SITUATION
Over the last two weeks heavy rains and winds affected south-eastern India and Sri Lanka, causing damage and deaths, especially in Tamil Nadu state (India), as well as some areas of Malaysia.
INDIA
• Very heavy rains affected south-eastern India on 8-11 November, due to the passage of a Tropical Depression, causing floods especially in Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh. Moreover, last week another low pressure system moved off the coast of these two states, causing more rains and floods.
• As of 24 November, there were 169 dead in Tamil Nadu and another 33 in Andhra Pradesh, while 400,000 people have been displaced in Tamil Nadu.
• The Government is responding in the most affected urban areas. However, according to ECHO reports, low caste communities (approximately 2,500 households) are not receiving any aid and would require humanitarian assistance. ECHO is currently carrying out an assessment in the area.
• Over the next 24 h moderate to heavy rainfall may still affect Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
SRI LANKA
• Heavy rains affected also Sri Lanka over the last week, causing floods especially in the Northern province. As of 24 November, there were nearly 105,000 people affected (mostly in the Northern Province) and 426 people displaced in six evacuation centers.
• Over the next 24 h, moderate (locally heavy) rains may still affect several areas of Sri Lanka.
MALAYSIA
• Floods have been affecting Peninsular Malaysia over the past few days. State media report flooded houses in the States of Pahang, Perak and Selangor, with the total number of evacuees hosted in shelters reaching 1 069 (as of 24 November morning).
• Over the next 48 h, heavy rains, winds and thundesrtorms may still affect western Malaysia.
