Heavy rains have affected northeastern India and Bangladesh since the beginning of June, causing floods and landslides.
BANGLADESH
• The heavy rains of the last few days has worsened the flood situation in Bangladesh. So far, nine northern districts are experiencing flooding.
• An estimated 10 000 households are in need of assistance. People living on embankments face shortages of safe drinking water and food. Displaced affected families are also in need of temporary shelter support. Almost all cultivated lands of the reported areas have been affected directly.
However, at present no precise information about the exact damage to crops is available.
• According to media, the situation in Bogra, Sirajganj and Sunamganj has slightly improved.
FORECAST: Over the next 48 h moderate rain and thunderstorms may still affect Sylhet division (northeastern Bangladesh) and some areas of northern and eastern Bangladesh.
INDIA
• In the state of Assam, nearly 360 villages in 11 districts have been affected with over 100 000 people affected and 200 houses damaged (as of 16 June, Gov. of Assam).
• In Meghalaya state, media reported at least five dead due floods, landslides and lighting.
FORECAST: Over the next 24h, moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms may affect several areas of Meghalaya and Assam.
