SITUATION

• Heavy rainfall and consequent floods, river overflow and landslides have been affecting mostly the northern half of India over the past two weeks .

• As of 26 June, over 80 people have died in the State of Gujarat and more than 10 000 people had to evacuate their homes .

• In the Indian Administered part of Jammu and Kashmir, river Jhelum has overflowed, causing damages to homes and the road infrastructure and triggering evacuations.

• Flash floods in the district of Malkangiri in Odisha damaged more than 400 houses and displaced 600 people, according to local media, as of 23 June .

• Severe weather caused at least five deaths in Meghalaya, as of 17 June.

• In Assam, the floods that caused widespread damage in many districts since the beginning of June, have now mostly receded, leaving only Chirang and Lakhimpur affected, with a population totalling nearly 500 people, according to the State’s Disaster Management authorities, as of 25 June.

• Over the next 24h, heavy rainfall is forecast for the north-eastern States, as well as along the western Indian coast .

• The monsoon season in India known as “Southwest Monsoon” lasts from June until September each year. As of 26 June, the Indian Meteorological Department reports that the seasonal rain is currently affecting the whole of the country.
